Energy Relief Supports Markets While Crops Face Serious Weather Risks

On the weekly Ag Commodity Corner+ Podcast with experts Farms.com Risk Management Chief Commodity Strategist Moe Agostino and Commodity Strategist Abhinesh Gopal, for the week of April 13 to 17, 2026, both experts agreed that the markets moved significantly.  The title of the podcast was “Crude Oil Futures Plunge 13% as Stocks Rally to Record Highs on Headline News- the Strait of Hormuz!”

The discussion highlighted that global markets reacted positively to easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which helped stabilize energy supply routes.

As a result, crude oil prices declined sharply, easing inflation concerns and lifting stock markets. Major equity indices moved higher, reflecting improved investor confidence and reduced market uncertainty.

In agricultural markets, grains showed resilience despite early pressure from falling energy prices. Corn and soybeans managed to close higher for the week, supported by strong domestic demand and continued participation from investment funds.

Wheat markets attracted strong interest as worsening crop conditions in key growing regions raised concerns about potential yield losses.

The experts emphasized that weather remained a critical factor. Drought conditions, limited rainfall, and the risk of late frost threatened winter wheat areas across the U.S. Plains.

These risks added support to wheat prices and increased overall market sensitivity to weather updates.

Fertilizer affordability was another major topic. Many farmers delayed fertilizer purchases, expecting prices to decline. Instead, prolonged high costs strained farm budgets, especially for smaller producers.

Although fertilizer prices showed early signs of easing, the relief may come too late for some ahead of peak planting.

The team noted that while energy markets cooled, agriculture markets remained supported by weather uncertainty, tight supply expectations, and firm demand.

They concluded that volatility is likely to continue as markets balance global developments with seasonal agricultural risks.

George discusses the early signs of sclerotinia stem rot, explaining how infection begins in the stem, impacts pod development, and leads to premature ripening. He also shares insights on lygus bug management, including timing of spray applications to minimize feeding damage and maintain seed size and quality.

With cool, damp summer conditions, George notes that while disease pressure is present, overall field health remains good. The crop is just beginning to show early seed colour change, signaling progress toward maturity.
