PED Case #12 found in Manitoba finisher barn

On May 6, 2017, Manitoba’s Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) confirmed positive test results for PEDv from a finisher operation in southeast Manitoba. This farm is within 5 km of the infected sow farm that was confirmed PED positive on May 2. Manitoba Agriculture’s Emergency Operation Centre is continuing to operate, assisting the affected producer and conducting a full disease investigation. Biocontainment measures have been implemented at the site. Producers within a 5-km radius of the infected site and other contacts with the site have been alerted, and are monitoring their herds and collecting samples for testing. All veterinarians with clients within the 5 km area have been made aware of the site’s location.

Strict biosecurity measures critical!

The PED virus doesn’t grow legs and walk into barns. It has to be brought in on feet, clothes or equipment. Producers are urged to ensure 100% compliance with their strict biosecurity practices – every person, every time:

All personnel entering barns must enter and exit through a Danish entry system every time, showering in and out (if possible), and leaving outside clothes and footwear on the dirty side of the entry.

If and only if it is critical for service personnel to visit a farm, they should park outside the yard (if possible) and walk in with bootie-covered footwear. They too must enter and exit through a Danish entry if they enter the barn (even for mechanical rooms).

Producers visiting assembly yards or other infected sites should wear booties when outside of their vehicle, focusing on keeping their trailer AND truck from becoming contaminated.

Livestock trailers must be immaculately cleaned and disinfected (and preferably dried) before returning to the farm.

Producers must be very critical of biosecurity practices during this time. Ensure that your site is not the next one to break out with this terrible disease!
