Postemergence Weed Control in Field Crops

By Steve Whittington

Join Michigan State University Extension for the Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series on Thursday, May 14, 2026, featuring Michigan State University weed scientist Erin Burns, PhD, discussing postemergence weed control options.

Burns is an assistant professor and weed science Extension specialist at Michigan State University with a research focus on emerging issues of problematic weeds in Michigan field crop systems. Weeds compete with crops for water, nutrients and light, leading to reductions in crop yield. To maintain yield, it is critical not to miss the postemergence timing window for good weed control. Weather, herbicide resistant weeds and unforeseen problems can all contribute to weed challenges. Therefore, it is important to have a plan in place for postemergence weed control.

Specific topics discussed will include the optimal size to control troublesome weeds, crop growth stage restrictions for postemergence herbicide application, and options to control mid- to late season weed escapes. You don’t want to miss this timely topic in the midst of planting season here in Michigan.

Immediately following the discussion on postemergence weed control, MSU Extension agricultural climatologist Jeff Andresen will give a weekly weather report.

The Michigan State University Extension Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series sessions are held every week during the growing season via Zoom video or phone conference. These virtual meetings take place every Thursday morning from 7–8 a.m. March through September.

Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. We also have a part-time employee, Brock. My dad started the farm in 1980. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.

I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.

I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
