Potato Crop Starting To Catch Up

The Plant Pathologist with Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development says this year's potato crop is looking pretty good.

Vikram Bisht says the crop is a bit behind because of the late start but some of the early varieties are now starting to catch up.

He notes the recent dry conditions didn't have much of an effect on potatoes.

"The time when everything was getting dry most of the potato guys were able to irrigate, so the moisture was fairly good for good growth," he said.

Bisht said there are three main areas of potato production across the province including the Winkler area in the south, the Portage area in the central region and the Carberry area in the southwest.

He says fortunately there have been no reported cases of late blight.
