Law enforcement in Saskatchewan is reminding farmers to lock up their vehicles.

“In the past month, Saskatchewan RCMP has received a number of reports of thefts of trucks parked in fields, including from the Carnduff, Humboldt, Prince Albert, Melville and Weyburn detachment areas.,” the RCMP said in a Sept. 21 update.

The RCMP also provided tips for farmers to consider when out in their trucks:

  • Don’t idle an occupied vehicle.
  • Install an alarm system or steering wheel lock.
  • Lock parked vehicles and remove the keys.
  • Try to park in well-lit and secure areas.

Truck thefts have occurred in other parts of Saskatchewan too.

On Sept. 23, Estevan RCMP asked for the public’s assistance to find a stolen truck.

Between Sept. 22 and 23, a white 1995 GMC dually with a black tool box and hoist was stolen from the Souris Valley Memorial Gardens.

And on Sept. 11, a silver Dodge Ram 2500 truck with Saskatchewan plate 410 BWZ was stolen from a property in Luseland.

Saskatchewan had more than 1,500 reports of vehicle theft in 2021.

Of the 1,519 reports (126 per month) reported between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 451, or about 29 per cent of victims admitted to leaving keys inside at the time of the theft.
