SHIC Reports Decrease in PRRS, Increase in PED and Mycoplasma

The Swine Health Information Center reports, while the movement of PRRS has been relatively limited in the U.S. this spring, there have been increased reports of PED and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.
The Swine Health Information Center has released its April 2019 Newsletter.
Dr. Paul Sundberg, the Executive Director of the Swine Health Information Center, notes April Domestic Swine Disease Monitoring Report features a new online portal for viewing full report dashboards.

Clip-Dr. Paul Sundberg-Swine Health Information Center:

PRRS has been relatively quiet this winter and into this spring as far as continued infections and spread go and so that's a welcome development.
PED, Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea, however, has increased through March and that detection is at a higher level than what we would expect through an analysis of history.
There may be a number of things going on there, including the weather, pig movement, animal movement, people moving the virus around.
We don't have a lot of report of why but certainly are monitoring what and we're looking for that.
For PRRS and for PED, that's happened through March.
Also what we've started to do is we've started to report the detection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.
That is an infection that has high interest right now for producers and for veterinarians for control and so we're adding Mycoplasma to the list of diseases that we're reporting about.
There has been through March increased detection of Mycoplasma and there are higher than expected incidents of Mycoplasma based on that historical information.

Dr. Sundberg says the full reports as well as a link to the new on line portal are available on the SwineHealth.Org web site.

Video: Revolutionizing Pork Production: Gene Editing and Antimicrobial Stewardship with Banks Baker of PIC

In this episode, we explore the transformative advancements in pork production with Banks Baker of PIC. Consumer expectations for high animal care standards, antimicrobial stewardship, and sustainable practices are reshaping the food industry. Innovative solutions and technologies are emerging to meet these demands, fostering sustainable food production.

Gene editing plays a pivotal role in enhancing animal health and aligns with antibiotic stewardship goals in pork production. Baker discusses the potential impact of gene editing on preventing diseases like PRRS and how it parallels successful applications in human healthcare. Challenges and considerations in applying this technology to animal agriculture, particularly in protecting pigs from diseases, are also explored.

PIC's groundbreaking development of a PRRS-resistant pig through gene editing is highlighted, offering broader implications for pig herd health and the significant reduction of antibiotic use. Navigating global regulatory systems presents challenges and opportunities for PIC, and Baker sheds light on the company's approach to gaining approvals worldwide.

Join us in this episode as we delve into the future of pork production, where cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices are reshaping the industry landscape.
