Uncertainty grows as Nebraskans wait for full SNAP payments

The federal government shutdown has ended, but many Nebraskans are still living with uncertainty as they wait for full Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. Partial SNAP payments were released soon after the shutdown lifted, with some people receiving up to 65 percent of their monthly amount. Others received far less or nothing, creating confusion and concern.

State officials explained that partial payments were approved once guidance came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Full benefits are expected soon, but final authorization is still underway. Local organizations say families are anxious, especially those who depend on SNAP to buy basic groceries.

Advocates note that while partial payments helped slightly, they were not enough for many households. Food prices remain high, and families continue turning to food pantries to fill the gap. Community groups report that demand surged during the shutdown and has not slowed down.

Another challenge is the return of federal work requirements and immigration-related restrictions for SNAP. These rules make it harder for some previous recipients, especially immigrant and refugee families, to receive support. Many households worry about losing access to reliable food assistance.

Local food banks and churches have stepped in to help. ConnectioN Point in Lincoln reported giving out nearly 1,000 meals in a week, mostly to refugee and immigrant families who remain deeply affected. Without EBT access, many cannot purchase culturally meaningful foods, increasing stress for parents trying to maintain familiar diets for their children.

Catholic Social Services also saw calls for food assistance double when SNAP benefits failed to arrive at the start of the month. Their rural locations reported some of the highest needs, where fewer food support options are available. With Thanksgiving approaching, the organization expects continued high demand.

Community donations have helped provide meals and holiday baskets to hundreds of households. Even as full SNAP benefits return, food banks expect that uncertainty, new requirements, and rising living costs will keep many Nebraska families in need.
