Snow, Rain Causes More Problems For Farmers

A tough harvest has become even more difficult for farmers around Southern Saskatchewan, after the large amount of rain and snow that has fallen the last few days.

Harvest has been put to a standstill, at a time when most crops were already behind.

Shannon Friesen, Crops Extension Specialist with the Agriculture Knowledge Centre here in Moose Jaw.

"It will take a little bit of time of course for it to melt and for those fields to actually dry up and be able to support equipment. Not only will it delay us but it will also cause a lot of issues for us with lodging, which is when the crop collapses from heavy snow. It's going to take longer to actually pick the crop off and to combine it."

"Typically what happens when we have a wet situation like this is that things kind of dry, and farmers will continue to try and combine as much as they can. We're very hopeful of course that October completely turns around for us and that we have a beautiful, warm and most importantly dry October. We're going to need some dry conditions in the next week or so."

If dealing with the wet harvest is starting to take its toll on your mental health, Friesen goes on to say that there are channels provided to help.

"Certainly a very stressful time for farmers out there, so we do want to encourage them that if they're having any stressful situations or thoughts that we would encourage them to use the Farm Stress Line which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's confidential and anonymous. That number is 1-800-667-4442."
