USGBC trains Mexican industry on grain storage and pest control methods

The U.S. Grains and BioProducts Council (USGBC) recently organized a series of grain storage roadshows across key Mexican cities. The events brought together participants from the agri-food sector, including feed manufacturers, grain traders, and livestock producers.

The program was led by a grain storage consultant along with a team of private sector and academic experts. These sessions focused on improving grain storage practices and sharing practical knowledge with industry stakeholders.

During the events, experts highlighted important challenges such as high moisture variation, insect infestations, and the presence of broken corn and foreign material. These issues can affect feed efficiency, reduce profitability, and lead to grain losses.

“By strengthening technical capabilities throughout the value chain, the Council can help improve operational efficiency, reduce economic losses associated with spoilage and quality deterioration and support more consistent corn use,” said USGBC Grain Storage Consultant Pedro Kadota.

Participants received training on modern grain monitoring tools, including sensors and digital technologies. The sessions also introduced data-driven approaches that allow better decision-making in storage operations. These tools can detect risks early and help maintain grain quality.

Another key focus was pest management. Experts explained current fumigation practices, resistance challenges and new pest control technologies. Attendees also received hands-on training in identifying storage of insects, which is important for effective control.

The final sessions emphasized the use of advanced monitoring systems that support early problem detection. These systems improve operational efficiency and reduce risks in storage environments.

The program builds earlier industry partnerships and technical projects. It also aims to strengthen confidence in U.S. grain quality and support long-term trade relations.

Overall, the roadshows helped improve technical skills across the value chain. This initiative is expected to enhance grain usage and increase demand for U.S. corn in Mexico.
