USDA Report Highlights Swine Market Trends: Volume and Price Analysis

The June 12, 2023Daily Direct Afternoon Hog Report published by the Agricultural Marketing Service offers key insights into the volume and price trends within the swine market.

Producers sold 1,995 swine through negotiated agreements, while other market formulas accounted for a significant volume of 28,223 swine. Swine or pork market formulas witnessed robust participation with 149,925 swine sold. Other purchase arrangements also made a substantial contribution, totaling 147,612 swine. Packer sales across all purchase types reached 39,215 swine.

The report further reveals that the national weighted average price for barrows and gilts purchased swine was $93.24 per hundred pounds. The Iowa/Minnesota region reported a slightly higher average price of $93.67 per hundred pounds.

Detailed analysis of specific purchase categories within the barrows and gilts segment showed price ranges and weighted average prices. Notable categories included "Other Market Formula (Carcass)" with a volume of 29,290 swine and a weighted average price of $84.78 per hundred pounds.
