Wool you believe it: Faculty of Agriculture launches "Barley Boutique"

Wool blankets made from the Faculty of Agriculture sheep flock have long been a cherished item on campus, admired by faculty, staff, students, and alumni alike.

Over the past 20 years, these cozy and beautifully crafted blankets have become a symbol of community and pride, extending their appeal across the university and beyond. Most recently, their reputation reached a heartwarming milestone when one of these wool blankets appeared on the wedding registry of a Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences alum, highlighting the affection for this campus treasure and the special connection it fosters within the Dalhousie community.

For years, these blankets were sold primarily through word-of-mouth and could only be picked up on the Truro campus. However, their growing popularity and demand has paved the way for an exciting new chapter.

The blankets are now officially available as part of the Barley Boutique, an online shopping platform through Dalhousie, with domestic shipping now offered. It has never been easier to bring home a piece of campus heritage.

The blankets, measuring 48 x 60 inches, are handcrafted by MacAuslands Woolen Mill in Prince Edward Island, ensuring their quality and authenticity.

Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. We also have a part-time employee, Brock. My dad started the farm in 1980. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.

I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
