North Central Research Extension Center Hosting Workshop, Tour

NDSU is hosting a pulse crop field tour and tile drainage workshop near Minot on July 7.

North Dakota State University’s North Central Research Extension Center near Minot will host the Northern Pulse Growers Association field tour from 9 a.m. to noon on July 7.

The center also will hold a tile drainage/soil health/cover crop workshop from 1 to 3:15 p.m. the same day.

A joint lunch featuring beef from pea-fed cattle will be served at noon for the participants of both events. The Northern Pulse Growers Association, Ward County Ag Improvement Association and Ward County Soil Conservation District are sponsoring the lunch.

Speakers and topics for the Northern Pulse Growers Association field tour are:

  • Weed control in pulse crops - Brian Jenks, North Central Research Extension Center weed scientist
  • Insect/pest management - Daniel Waldstein, area Extension crop protection specialist at the North Central Research Extension Center
  • Disease management - Michael Wunsch, Carrington Research Extension Center plant pathologist
  • Pulse quality research – Dil Thavarajah, assistant professor, NDSU School of Food Systems
  • NDSU pulse breeding program – Kevin McPhee, associate professor in NDSU’s Plant Sciences Department
  • Updates from the Northern Pulse Growers Association

Topics and presenters for the tile drainage/soil health/cover crop workshop are:

  • What tile drainage can and can’t do for you - 1 p.m., Tom Scherer, NDSU Extension Service agricultural engineer
  • Preparing fields for planting a cover crop - 1:45 p.m., Jenks
  • Planting cover crops to use water and improve soil health - 2 p.m., Jon Stika, Natural Resources Conservation Service area resource soil scientist
  • Winter wheat as a cover crop – Jason Riopel, Ducks Unlimited agronomist

Both events are free of charge, and no preregistration is required.
