In the 1990s, the papaya ringspot virus nearly wiped out the entire crop in Hawaii.

Dennis Gonsalves (pictured), a scientist from Cornell University, developed varieties of papaya called SunUp and Rainbow that could resist the virus.

Today, Hawaii is responsible for more than 95 percent of all U.S. papaya exports.
