Equine sector generates billions to economy, supporting jobs in rural communities!

A new economic study has revealed the major contribution of Ontario’s equine agricultural sector to the province’s economy and rural communities. The Ontario Equine Agricultural Economic Impact Study Report provides the first comprehensive evaluation of the industry since 2010 and offers updated data on its economic, environmental, and social importance.

The study was developed by a steering committee made up of equine industry stakeholders. Their goal was to better understand the scale and value of the sector and provide reliable information for policymakers, industry leaders, and the public. For more than a decade, there had been limited data available about the economic role of the equine industry in Ontario.

According to the report, Ontario’s equine agricultural sector supports approximately 35,739 full-time equivalent jobs. The industry also contributes about $4.4 billion to the province’s Gross Domestic Product. Overall, the sector generates an estimated $8.2 billion in total economic output, demonstrating its strong influence on the provincial economy.

The equine industry in Ontario includes many activities beyond traditional horse farming. It covers horse racing, competitive sports, recreational riding, therapy programs, tourism, education, and training services. These diverse activities allow the sector to support a wide range of businesses and employment opportunities across rural and urban communities.

Horses also contribute to environmental management. They graze on land that may not be suitable for crop production, helping maintain natural landscapes and rural green spaces. This role supports land stewardship and promotes long-term agricultural sustainability in the province.

The study also showed strong participation from the equine community. During the survey phase, 1,207 horse owners and 506 equine-related businesses shared information that helped shape the report’s findings. Their responses provided valuable insight into the structure and impact of the industry.

Industry leaders believe the report will serve as an important tool for planning and policy development. “The equine sector is a vital part of Ontario’s agricultural landscape,” said James Whelan, President of the Ontario Harness Horse Association, Ontario Equine Education and Employment Program and Chair of the Project Steering Committee. “This report gives the province the up‑to‑date information needed to understand the sector’s true value and to support informed decision‑making for years to come.”

Overall, the report highlights the equine industry as an essential part of Ontario’s agricultural landscape, supporting economic growth, environmental management, and strong rural communities.
