Barentz, a leading global distributor of life science and specialty ingredients, has announced that Pestell Nutrition and Origination will be rebranded as Barentz, effective immediately.

The name change follows the acquisition of Pestell by Barentz International in August 2021.

From piglets to fattening, Barentz can support the breeder with unique products that successfully focus on average daily growth and feed conversion. As environmental factors and animal well-being play an increasingly important role, the company said that it focuses on ingredients and solutions that lower the impacts of environmental factors.

"This is a significant milestone for our company as we accelerate our growth under Barentz," stated John DeVos, the President of Animal Nutrition of Barentz North America—headquartered in Oakville, Ontario. "I am pleased by our organization’s commitment to market leadership and continuous improvement to deliver better solutions for our customers and principal partners."

Barentz North America is a leading global life science ingredient and specialty chemical distributor. The company sources branded specialty ingredients from leading manufacturers worldwide, and its ingredient experts provide value-added technical support that includes pre-mixing, blending, ingredient formulation, and ingredient testing from its state-of-the-art, customized formulation centers and application laboratories in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), the Americas, and Asia-Pacific.

Mike McKenna, the Chief Executive Officer of Barentz North America, added: "This rebranding aligns our global organization and allows us to deliver the best solutions for our customers and principal partners, locally and around the world.

He continued, "We will leverage the global scale of Barentz while continuing to invest in our core markets as we execute our strategy to become a global leader in the life science and broader specialty chemical industries."

Established in 1953, Barentz has operations in more than 70 countries, with a strong presence in Europe and North America and a rapidly growing network in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific. With a turnover of €2.5 billion (CDN$3.6 billion or US$2.7 billion), the company employs around 2,000 people worldwide and serves over 22,000 customers. In this episode of The Swine it Podcast Show Canada, Dr. Jenelle Dunkelberger, geneticist at Topigs Norsvin, explains how genetics can improve disease resilience in pigs. She explores how resilience differs from resistance, the role of genetic variation, and how breeding strategies can enhance health and performance under disease pressure. Dr. Dunkelberger also covers practical applications and future implications for swine production. Listen now on all major platforms!

"Controlled experimental trials confirm that differences in mortality and performance under disease pressure are linked to genetic background, even when environmental conditions remain consistent."

Meet the guest: Dr. Jenelle Dunkelberger / jenelle-dunkelberger-9200ab86 is a geneticist at Topigs Norsvin, where she leads the Global Health and Behavior Research Platform. She earned her PhD from Iowa State University, focusing on host genetics and disease response in pigs. Her work centers on improving swine health and performance through genetic selection for resilience and behavior traits.
