U.S. Turkey Farms struggle with production decline

The USDA highlighted a downturn in turkey production, with a notable 9.6% decline this May compared to last year. This reduction is largely due to ongoing challenges from the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which has severely impacted turkey farms, particularly in areas prone to wild bird migrations.

Despite an 11.8% drop in turkey slaughter and a slight increase in average weights, overall production for the first half of 2024 fell by 5.3%.

HPAI has been particularly destructive, with over a million turkeys lost to the disease this year, exacerbating supply issues as the industry braces for the Thanksgiving demand spike.

Looking ahead, the outlook remains grim with USDA forecasting a continued production decline of 4.5% for the year, driven by low egg incubation rates and persistent disease threats. The average wholesale turkey price has also decreased, compounding financial pressures on farmers.

As the industry navigates these turbulent times, the focus remains on mitigating HPAI risks and stabilizing production to meet consumer needs during crucial holiday periods.
