Three graduates awarded for animal agriculture leadership impact

Purdue University’s Department of Animal Sciences has proudly named the recipients of its 2025 Distinguished Animal Sciences Alumni Awards. The awards celebrate graduates who have shown outstanding leadership and made lasting contributions to animal agriculture, veterinary science, and their communities.

The awards are divided into three categories: early career, mid-career, and lifetime achievement, depending on the year the recipient earned their first degree from the department.

Dr. Bret Marsh, DVM, received the Lifetime Award. With a long career dedicated to veterinary medicine and public health, Dr. Marsh is known for shaping livestock industry policies. His leadership has had a lasting impact at both state and national levels.

Eric Sheiss earned the Mid-Career Award. Recognized for his leadership in the livestock sector, Sheiss has contributed to the advancement of swine production systems. His work has improved operational efficiency and set new benchmarks in the industry.

Nicholas Tharp was honored with the Early Career Award. A promising leader in animal sciences, Tharp has already made a name for himself by improving animal health and production methods through his innovative work.

According to the university, honorees are selected based on leadership, career achievements, and service beyond the workplace. Each award celebrates individuals who have gone above and beyond in their field to improve the future of animal agriculture.

The eligibility for each award is based on when the graduate received their first degree: 2009–2019 for early career, 1993–2008 for mid-career, and 1992 or earlier for lifetime recognition.

These recognitions reflect Purdue’s commitment to developing leaders who shape the future of agriculture and animal science.

Video: Season 6, Episode 10: Defining Resiliency and the Research Driving Swine Health Forward

Genetic research and new technologies continue to influence the future of swine health and production efficiency. In this episode, we explore how research and technology are being used to support stronger, more resilient pigs, while also improving overall production outcomes. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Jenelle Dunkelberger, geneticist with Topigs Norsvin, to discuss both routine and emerging strategies for improving piglet, pig, and sow livability. She outlines two primary approaches to enhancing resiliency: gene editing and traditional selective breeding. Continuing the resiliency conversation, we also hear from Dr. Lucina Galina, director of technical research projects at the Pig Improvement Company. She shares insights into ongoing gene-editing work focused on PRRS, detailing the pathway to success, regulatory and practical considerations, and the questions that still remain as the technology evolves. Together, these conversations provide a closer look at how research, genetics and innovation are shaping the future of swine health and livability.
