CFIB survey shows firms want faster action on energy capacity

Farmers and small business owners across Canada are urging governments to act quickly to strengthen the country’s domestic energy supply. According to new preliminary data from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), many businesses believe stronger energy production and infrastructure are essential for economic stability.

The survey results show that about 90% of small businesses, including farmers,  want governments to prioritize increasing Canada’s energy production and capacity. Business owners believe that improving energy supply will help ensure companies have reliable and affordable energy to operate and grow.

Farms, as well as many other small businesses rely heavily on stable energy prices to manage daily operations. When energy supplies are limited or unstable, costs can rise quickly. These increases can affect transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, and many other sectors that depend on fuel and electricity.

“Canada cannot continue to sit on the sidelines when it comes to developing our energy potential,” said Dan Kelly, CFIB president. “It shouldn’t take supply shocks and external threats to get governments moving on projects and policies that protect our economy. The best time to start was a decade ago. The next best time is today.”

The survey also found that rising energy costs are already creating challenges for many businesses. Around 68% of small business owners reported that their energy costs have increased during the past year. These rising costs come at a time when global events continue to create uncertainty and price fluctuations in energy markets.

Higher fuel prices do not only affect businesses directly. They also influence the entire supply chain. When transportation and production costs increase, businesses may need to raise prices or reduce expenses in other areas. For small businesses with limited financial resources, absorbing these costs can be difficult.

Industry representatives say stronger investment in energy infrastructure could help stabilize supply and protect businesses from sudden price spikes. Expanding production capacity and improving energy transportation systems could also strengthen Canada’s economic resilience.

Both producers and small business owners believe that governments should move quickly to approve projects and invest in infrastructure that supports domestic energy development. They say faster action could help ensure reliable energy access, support economic growth, and reduce long-term pressure on businesses across Canada.
