US ruling protects farmers and limits state claims on Roundup labeling rules

The United States Supreme Court issued a major 7:2 ruling in the Durnell Roundup case, confirming that federal law overrides state-based claims related to product warnings. The decision supports the role of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in determining the safety of crop protection products.

The ruling found that state-level claims requiring different warning labels conflict with federal law under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). This means companies that follow EPA-approved labeling cannot face additional penalties under state laws.

"This decision is good for American farmers who help feed the world. It provides the regulatory clarity necessary for innovators like us to develop the agricultural tools that guarantee an affordable food supply," said Bayer CEO Bill Anderson.

He continued, "This litigation has enormous costs for the company and has impacted public trust. The decision brings overdue justice on an issue that should have been clarified much earlier. It's time to put it behind us. Strengthened by this ruling, we continue to pursue our multi-pronged containment strategy, which includes the previously announced class settlement."

Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, has been reviewed by many scientific bodies. The EPA has consistently stated that it is not likely to cause cancer. Regulatory agencies across the world have reached similar conclusions after reviewing available data.

The decision is expected to reduce the number of ongoing and future lawsuits related to warning labels. Many current claims are based on failure-to-warn arguments, which the ruling now limits. The case also strengthens efforts to resolve claims through a proposed nationwide settlement program announced earlier in 2026.

Farmers are expected to benefit from this decision. For years, legal disputes created uncertainty around crop protection tools. Glyphosate-based products support farming practices like no-till agriculture, improve efficiency, and help maintain affordable food production.

The court also addressed concerns about relying on a single report that differs from the broader scientific consensus. It reinforced the importance of following expert reviews conducted by regulatory bodies rather than inconsistent courtroom decisions.

The ruling helps restore confidence in science-based regulation and brings stability to the agricultural sector. It may also allow companies to focus resources on innovation, research, and development.

Overall, the decision marks a turning point in long-running litigation and reinforces the importance of clear and consistent regulations for farmers, consumers, and the food supply chain.
