Carl Bednarski nominated to FCA board awaits Senate confirmation process

Former Michigan Farm Bureau President Carl Bednarski has been nominated by the White House to join the Farm Credit Administration (FCA) board. His nomination will move forward to a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing expected by the end of August.

The FCA is an independent federal agency that regulates and oversees the Farm Credit System, which is the largest agricultural lender in the United States. It also supervises the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation, known as Farmer Mac, which supports rural housing and agricultural loans.

Bednarski operates a third-generation family farm in Michigan with his wife Lisa and their sons CJ, Nathan, and Michael. They grow crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, dry beans, and sugarbeets.

He has also held several leadership roles in agriculture. He served as president of the Michigan Farm Bureau starting in 2014 and joined the American Farm Bureau Federation board in 2016. He stepped down in 2024 after 24 years of service.

“Given the current farm economy, it’s an opportunity to continue serving agriculture, while having an impact on regulatory policy affecting ag lending,” Bednarski said.

He continued, “As economic conditions continue to evolve, farmer access to financing from reliable institutions within the Farm Credit System that comprehend the evolving needs of production agriculture is essential — particularly for our young famers.”

In addition, Bednarski helped support major agricultural research projects at Michigan State University. These include a new dairy research center, greenhouse renovations, and livestock facility upgrades.

Bednarski said the nomination process took about 18 months and included detailed background checks. He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to continue serving agriculture, especially during current economic challenges.

Industry leaders, including Michigan Farm Bureau President Ben LaCross and AFBF President Zippy Duvall, have praised his leadership and experience.

“During my tenure on the MFB board, Carl always brought a practical point of view of what was in the best interest of farmers first and foremost, but he was also a visionary agricultural leader,” said LaCross.

He continued, “As a farmer with first-hand experience of the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture, combined with his ability to listen to concerns of producers, Carl has earned tremendous respect and credibility as an agricultural leader."

“Carl’s strong leadership abilities and knowledge of the financial world will serve Farm Credit well,” said Duvall. “Equally important, as a lifelong farmer, Carl will bring a passion for ensuring farmers continue to be well-served by the Farm Credit Administration.”

They believe his knowledge of farming and finance will help strengthen the Farm Credit System and support farmers’ access to reliable funding.
