Insect Forecasts Diamondback Moth, Wheat Stem

We continue our insect forecasts for 2012 with Scott Meers, insect management specialist with Alberta Agriculture.Today—diamondback moth. Because this insect migrates from the southern United States, Meers says he can’t make predictions. As a result, in-season monitoring is key.

When it comes to the wheat stem sawfly, which isn’t a problem north of Highway 1, Meers says last year saw the lowest numbers since the start of the last outbreak in the late 1990’s.

For grasshoppers, because they are so very weather dependent, Meers says they seldom follow the forecast.
