Canadian, Ontario Hog Slaughter Numbers Continue Ahead Of 2015

Canadian hog slaughter numbers are up just over 4 per cent from a year ago.

That’s for animals slaughtered in federal and provincial facilities.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reports Ontario hog slaughter so far this year is up 6 point 8 per cent.

Meanwhile, our live hog exports to the U-S are up 10 and a half per cent so far this year.

The University of Missouri’s Ron Plain reports the U-S was the number two exporter of pork world-wide last year.

That after ten years as the top exporter.

The European Union was tops in 2015.

Plain’s Hog Outlook quotes Iowa State University figures suggesting Iowa market hogs earned an average profit of $3.66 in March – the second profitable month reported so far this year.
