CanFax Manager Discusses U.S. Holstein Steers Fed In Alberta

Canfax Research Services Manager, Brenna Grant, says Holstein dairy steers are coming up from the United States to be finished in Alberta.

Grant says it's because of a change to a U.S. packer's procurement policy.

"They didn't want to take Holstein dairy steers in the Northwest Pacific, so that created a discount on those cattle and an opportunity to bring those cattle up into Alberta to finish them here."

Grant says these dairy steers are an opportunity to keep feedlot pens full.

She says they're able to add value in Canada, while taking advantage of Alberta packing capacity.

Grant was a speaker at the Catalyst Agriculture Conference earlier this month in DeWinton.
