CanoLAB 2016

canoLAB is a hands-on, interactive diagnostic workshop with live plants and insects.
 
Participants will be divided into groups of 20 and will take part in 8 x 45 minute sessions. Instructors will be among Western Canada’s top researchers and extension people.
 
canoLAB runs from 8:30am to 4:30pm daily. Each day is identical. Lunch is provided.
 
the 2016 canoLAB will be held in Lethbridge, AB for the first time.

SESSION LIST
 
Soil Testing and Canola Fertility – When and where are nutrients most effective and efficient? Get your hands dirty in this interactive lab that will feature canola plants with varying nutrient deficiencies in addition to a soil EC demo and canola plants grown in “mystery soil”.
 
Early Season Frost and Cold Tolerance – How do you know if your canola is going to bounce back from an early season frost? Learn all about cold tolerance and frost on young canola plants days and weeks after varying levels of cold stress.
 
Sprayer Nozzles, Efficacy & Drift – A hands-on look at how to maximize your sprayer’s efficiency. This session will help you understand how nozzle size, pressure, water volume will help you get optimal coverage.
 
Basic Genetics in Canola  – Have you ever isolated DNA before? We didn’t think so. This unique session is new to canoLAB 2016
 
Canola Grading and Crushing – It’s combined, now what? Frozen, weed seeds, green seed, chaff – it all makes it way to the crusher. What impact does seed quality have on storage, meal and oil production?Where in the world does our seed, meal or  oil end up and how does this end customer view our product?
 
Weed ID and Integrated Pest Management – Identify local and up-and-coming weed species, learn about staging and check out our live look-alike collection.
 
Pod Abortion and Plant Stress –  Canola produces a lot more flowers than it needs to maximize yield, but what might cause pod set to be well below expectation?
 
Insect Identification – This session is a CanoLAB favourite – our insect experts will take you through ID and management of some of the most important current and future canola pests
 
Instructors include: Ag Canada research scientists, Canola Council agronomists and top-notch extension people from government, industry and post-secondary institutions.
