The Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) program is pleased to announce its 2014 national mentorship recipients. The 16 recipients were selected following the final selection round at the CYL Spring Forum held in Calgary on March 22, 2014. A total of 26 semi-finalists vied for a spot in the national youth initiative of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA).
The 2014 CYL mentorship recipients are:
• British Columbia: Erin Durrell - Williams Lake.
• Alberta: Stacey Domolewski - Taber, Laura Ecklund - Olds, Tessa Nybo – Sundre, Stuart Somerville - Endiang, Colin Verbeek - Sturgeon County.
• Saskatchewan: Shari Beamish - Maidstone, Rae-Leigh Pederzolli - Saskatoon, Rob Voice – Bradwell.
• Manitoba: Kristine Blair - Woodside, Andrew Kopeechuk - Brandon, Brett McRae – Brandon, Neil Overby - Ste. Rose du Lac.
• Ontario: Scott Boese - Marysville, Amanda Broadhagen - Guelph, Jaclyn Horenberg – Stratford.
The CYL Spring Forum brought together the semi-finalists, current graduates and industry leaders for a weekend of networking and learning. The Forum included an afternoon of industry speakers followed by a day that featured both the selection of the new young leaders and the graduation of the current cohort.
CCA President Dave Solverson was among the Canadian beef cattle industry representatives to take part in the CYL Spring Forum. He identified the CYL Program as a premier program that the CCA is very proud of, stating that the industry is in good hands. “With the CYL Program I am confident that Canada will continue to produce some of the best beef in the world for years to come,” Solverson said.
He congratulated the 2014 recipients, who will be paired with a mentor for an eight-month mentorship. The CYL Development Program provides industry-specific training and mentorship opportunities to young producers. CYL participants have the opportunity to explore a potential career choice or involvement with a provincial/national producer organization, while gaining the expertise and business acumen necessary to sustain the cattle industry into the future.
Funding for the CYL Program is made available through its foundation partners, UFA Co-operative Ltd., the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA), Cargill and MNP. The program also receives support from gold sponsors Farm Credit Canada and New Holland. The CYL Spring Forum was sponsored by Elanco.
