NMPF members meet lawmakers to discuss labor trade and dairy priorities

More than 80 board members and young dairy farmers from the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) recently met with about 100 congressional offices in Washington, DC. The visit was part of the organization’s annual fly-in event, where farmers spoke directly with lawmakers about key issues affecting the dairy sector.

Farmers raised concerns about agricultural labor challenges, trade policies, and the recent return of New World screwworm in the United States. These topics are important as they affect farm productivity, biosecurity, and long-term sustainability of the dairy industry.

The fly-in followed NMPF’s June board meeting, where participants heard from Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Stephen Vaden and Ambassador Julie Callahan. Both speakers shared insights on the current agricultural economy and international trade conditions.

“We know what we need to do,” said NMPF President & CEO Gregg Doud in remarks before the fly-in. “We will push in every way we can to make things happen.”

During the meetings, several key priorities were highlighted. Members called for the passage of a new farm bill in 2026 to provide stability and support for farmers. They also stressed the need to maintain access to all types of milk in school meal programs.

In addition, farmers supported the DAIRY PRIDE Act, which aims to ensure clear and accurate labeling of milk products. They also urged lawmakers to strengthen dairy provisions when renewing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The organization also announced new additions, including board member Ted Vander Schaaf from Northwest Dairy Association and associate member Illinois Farm Bureau.

The fly-in was organized by NMPF’s Young Cooperators program. Meetings also included discussions on animal health, industry trends, and the role of artificial intelligence in dairy operations.
