Dr. Basil Gooden - USDA's New Under Secretary for Rural Development

Dr. Basil Gooden has been nominated by the President to serve as the Under Secretary for Rural Development at USDA. Tom Vilsack couldn’t be happier about it, and here’s why.

Dr. Gooden isn’t new to the world of agriculture. Imagine growing up on a cattle farm in Virginia, feeling the earth beneath your feet, and understanding the land's heartbeat. That's Dr. Gooden for you! His journey took a historic turn in 2016 when he became Virginia's first Black American Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry.

He didn't stop there. As Virginia State Director for Rural Development, Dr. Gooden was the go-to person for communities keen on USDA programs. And, not to forget, he’s been leading a massive team of 47 Rural Development State Directors since July 2021, ensuring every rural community gets its fair share from USDA.

What's the big deal about USDA’s Rural Development? Well, they are the folks behind job creation, better economic opportunities, and enhancing life quality in rural regions through their loan and grant programs.

And now, with Dr. Gooden's nomination, he's set to replace Xochitl Torres Small, who recently became Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. Given Dr. Gooden’s rich legacy and commitment, rural America sure seems to be in good hands!
