Budget increases investments in agriculture

Agriculture is receiving a boost in the provincial budget, with an investment of $662.7 million, up six per cent from last year's Budget.

Total expense for Agriculture is $1.68 billion for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

The province is contributing $89.4 million to the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership to continue supporting the province's agri-food and value-added sectors.

Around $524.3 million is being invested towards business risk management programs including Crop Insurance and AgriStability. It's an increase of 8.4 per cent from last year's budget.

The Budget has allocated $37 million towards research to support key personnel at crop and livestock research facilities and projects.

About $200 thousand is allocated for expanded mental health supports for agriculture producers, and their families through the Saskatchewan Farm Stress Line. As of April 1st, the Farm Stress Line will merge with the National Farmer Crisis Line to provide free, confidential mental health support and additional access to follow up counselling.

The budget is also fully funding animal welfare enforcement for livestock and companion animals through the Saskatchewan Animal Enforcement Agency.

Provincial Agriculture Minister David Marit says the provincial budget protects farmers, ranchers, and the ag industry amid market volatility and weather-related challenges.
