Food system supports jobs income and economic output across nation
Food and agriculture play a major role in shaping the US economy. While farming is often seen as work done in fields and ranches, its impact goes far beyond that. It supports industries, creates jobs, and drives economic growth across the country.
The 2026 Feeding of the Economy report highlights this impact. It shows that food and agriculture generated about $10.4 trillion in economic output. This is nearly one fifth of the total US economy. The system also supports around 49 million jobs nationwide.
Farmers and ranchers are at the center of this system. They produce raw materials that feed people and supply businesses. These materials move through processing, transportation, retail, and service sectors, creating jobs and income at every stage.
Direct farm jobs are only a small part of the workforce, with about 2.5 million workers. However, when food production and related industries are included, the number rises to more than 24 million jobs. This includes food manufacturing, transportation, grocery stores, and restaurants.
Beyond direct jobs, another 24 million jobs come from industries that support agriculture. These include trucking, construction, energy, finance, and retail. This shows how spending in agriculture spreads across the wider economy.
Wages connected to this sector are also significant. Direct activities generate over $1 trillion in wages, while supply industries and related spending add nearly $2 trillion more. In total, more than $3 trillion in wages is linked to food and agriculture.
Despite its strength, the sector faces challenges. Domestic fruit and vegetable production has declined due to rising costs, stricter rules, and global competition. This may shift jobs and economic value to other countries.
Food and agriculture are more than food production. They form a large economic system that supports jobs, income, and national stability. Protecting this system remains important for long-term growth.
