Fruit and Vegetable: OCO Examines Regenerative Agriculture Certification in Ontario Context

The Organic Council of Ontario (OCO) received funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in fall 2019 to evaluate regenerative certification and verification programs in an Ontario context. Titled the “Regenerative programs and incentives feasibility study,” the OCO study aims to:
  • determine if there’s a market for certifications;
  • identify benefits and barriers for large and small-scale producers to obtaining certification; and
  • explore incentives to encourage producers to pursue certification.
The most recent regenerative certification program OCO has examined is the Savory Institute’s Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV). EOV certification involves a Savory Institute-accredited surveyor visiting a participating farm, noting the farm’s current ecological baseline and what is possible as determined by a comparative reference area, and continuous monitoring of the farmland to see what improvements are made…

Spider Mite Control with Predatory Mites (Neoseiulus californicus)

Video: Spider Mite Control with Predatory Mites (Neoseiulus californicus)

The predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus is an effective natural enemy of various species of spider mites, including the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). As a key player in biological pest control, this predator helps growers protect their crops sustainably.

How does Neoseiulus californicus work?

•Specializes in targeting the larval and nymphal stages of spider mites.

•Also consumes spider mite eggs, ensuring population control.

•Detects prey through webbing and leaf damage rather than sight.

•Feeds by sucking out the contents of its prey.

Why use Neoseiulus californicus for spider mite control?

•Highly adaptable to different environments, including warm and dry conditions.

•Works as both a preventive and curative solution for spider mite infestations.

•Complements other predatory mites, such as Phytoseiulus persimilis, for integrated pest management (IPM).

•A natural, sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides.
