Grain Transportation Key Issue In 2018

Grain transportation was a key issue over the past year.

The Transportation Modernization Act received Royal Assent back in May.

"I think C-49 was a big deal, although it wasn't my bill," said Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay. "I think having that pass and having the amendments approved from the Senate were one of the highlights of probably my three years as Minister of Agriculture. I think dealing with the transportation issue, particularly in western Canada was so vitally important."

MacAulay says the agreement on a new NAFTA was another key development from the past year, along with the ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Another key moment saw the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) come into effect on April 1, 2018. Three billion dollars will be invested by federal, provincial and territorial governments over five years.

Dr. Emerson Nafziger is Professor Emeritus of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with degrees in agronomy from Ohio State, Purdue, and Illinois. His research has focused on nitrogen rate strategies and crop productivity. He co-developed the Maximum Return to Nitrogen (MRTN) model, which is widely used across the Midwest. His research spans N response trials, hybrid interactions, crop rotation effects, and yield stability.
