Jamaican government commemorates 60 years of the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program

The Government of Jamaica will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (SAWP) in 2026 with a series of national initiatives recognizing the contribution of Jamaican agricultural workers to Canada’s agricultural sector and to Jamaica’s development. The anniversary programme, to be led by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in Jamaica and the Jamaican Liaison Service in Canada, will highlight the historic partnership between Jamaica and Canada that has provided employment opportunities for thousands of Jamaica farm workers since the programme’s establishment in 1966. 

Minister of Labour and Social Security Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr indicated that the anniversary represents an important opportunity to recognize the resilience and dedication of Jamaican agricultural workers whose labour has helped sustain the programme for six decades.

“Jamaican farm workers have made an extraordinary contribution not only to Canada’s agricultural sector, but also to the development of Jamaica. Their work has supported families, strengthened livelihoods and created opportunities for future generations,” he said. “The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Programme has demonstrated how structured labour mobility arrangements can create shared benefits for participating countries while protecting the interests and welfare of workers. As we mark 60 years of cooperation, the Government of Jamaica remains focused on strengthening the Programme enhancing support systems for our workers overseas and ensuring that the important partnership continues to evolve in a way that benefits Jamaican workers and their families.”
