Kansas State University’s Poultry and Gamebird Research and Teaching Center is selling several breeds of pullets on Saturday, April 19. The young hens have been raised from hatch and selected for high egg production.
“These hens are perfect for small farm flocks,” said Scott Beyer, poultry specialist with K-State Research and Extension. “They’re all hybrids and will produce eggs at the most efficient costs.”
Beyer said the center always sells out, so buyers must reserve their pullets ahead of time. An order form is available online. The cost varies depending on the breed, which includes Hybrid Whites; Hybrid Browns; Hybrid Contrasts; and Dual Purpose Hybrids.
The pullets, which will be 17 weeks old, have been vaccinated and grown without antibiotics, Beyer said. By the day of the sale, they will have been vaccinated for Marek’s, Newcastle, bronchitis, avian encephalomyelitis (AE)/Fowl Pox, and infectious bursal diseases.
The hens have been raised and managed by students in K-State’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.
All birds must be picked up on April 19 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the farm, located at 2000 Marlatt Ave. in Manhattan. Buyers should bring their own containers and plan to transport the birds in an area where fresh air is available.
