Lower Canola Prices in 2012?

Lower Canola Prices in 2012?

Farmers have received very good prices for the oilseed during the past couple of years, but one analyst says growers may have to reign in their expectations in 2012.

"These markets are cyclical," says Mike Jubinville, an analyst with Pro Farmer Canada. "Not to say that I think we are going into a collapse. I don't believe that. But I think the highs may be in the process of being experienced and we may fade back a bit."

Jubinville says there will still be opportunities to lock in a profit, but margins may be a little tighter next year.

"In the bad times, it always seem like it's never going to end. In the good times, we think it's going to go on forever, but it doesn't work that way in agriculture," says Jubinville. "We've gone through a two year bullish cycle in ag commodities. We may be starting to see a process where we take a bit of a break."

The biggest concern is market volatily caused by international events, such as the staggering Greek economy and the European currency crisis.

Jubinville made the comments following a presentation at the Canola Expo in Yorkton on Wednesday.

Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.

I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
