Manitoba Corn Industry Continues To Grow

Corn research continues to advance in Manitoba.

Myron Krahn, president of the Manitoba Corn Growers Association, says producer check-offs continue to fund a number of initiatives including projects focusing on residue management, row spacing, and crop rotation.

Krahn notes that there's lots of room for growth in the corn industry.

"Some of the research we're conducting now is going to help with this but also the hybrids that are coming out that will be available to producers," he said. "There certainly is lots of room for growth with the industry. You always have to bear in mind there's not more land available, so everytime there's another corn acre that takes an acre away from something else. The upside potential for corn is there for producers and that's only going to get better going forward."

Krahn expects to see about 250,000 acres of grain corn seeded in the province this year, which is similar to last year.

He says the highest number ever grown in Manitoba was back in 2013, when 342,000 acres went into the ground.
