Manitoba's Soybean Harvest Progressing Quickly

Manitoba's soybean growers made good harvest progress over the past week.

Dennis Lange, based in the Altona-region, is the province's Pulse Specialist.

"In this area we're probably about 40 to 50 per cent complete on the soybean harvest," he said. "Provincially, we're going to be a little less than that but things are really moving along."

Lange commented on yields so far.

"There has been a range. High 40's, almost 50's, not unheard of but I think for the most part we're definitely going to be higher than our provincial average this year. Normally, we're in that 35 bushel per acre range, if you look at our 5-year average. I'm thinking this year provincially, we should be somewhere in that 38 to 40 range."

He notes quality is also looking good, for the most part.

"Out west, they're a little bit further behind yet, so we'll see how that frost we had about a month or so ago will affect some of the beans. For the most part, I think they were far enough along but there were some pockets that the beans were still in that early R6 stage and there I could see maybe higher frost damage in those fields."

Lange expects to see good harvest progress this week as well, if the weather cooperates.
