Market Analyst Says Oats Could Be 'Sleeper' Crop In 2019

When looking at the markets, farmers always want to know what that sleeper crop is going to be.

David Drozd, President & Senior Grain Marketing Analyst with AgChieve Corporation, says oats could make farmers some good money in 2019.

"Oats is one of those crops where we've got very tight stocks right now and in order to satisfy those tight stocks, we're going to need to see additional acres put in in Canada this year and right now the prices just aren't high enough in the new crop being offered to entice farmers to put in those extra acres," he explained. "If the acres don't go in, it could be another good year for oat prices."

He's expecting to see a spring rally for both canola and soybeans.

"We traditionally see a spring rally, as we move past the South American harvest, now all heads turn to the outlook for North America and of course all eyes are on the U.S...the uncertainty helps to bring us back up."

Drozd was a guest speaker last week at Steinbach Crop Day.
