More Reports of Damage From Hurricane Idalia

By Pam Knox

Reports of damage from Hurricane Idalia continue to be collected. The Vegetable Growers News published an updated report this weekend. It discusses the damage to pecans and fruit orchards as well as the losses due to power outages. You can read it here.

In addition to the article linked above, I have seen more information on the GA Department of Agriculture Situation Report. Some of the additional damage that was reported was the damage to numerous buildings like the Valdosta Farmers Market, including many farm buildings, shade structures, and fences as well as many animal shelters. Power outages resulted in the loss of at least 70,000 chickens in two houses that lost power and some loss of pork products due to loss of refrigeration. Many dairies had to use generators to continue milking and refrigeration and some farms needed water delivery for livestock when pumps could not be operated.
