Free online training helps families plan smooth farm ownership transitions
Succession planning is an important step for every farm and ranch operation, yet many families delay the conversation because it can be difficult and emotional. To help producers address this challenge, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) has introduced a free online learning module focused on succession planning.
The educational resource is designed to help farming and ranching families begin discussions about the future of their operations. It guides users through the key stages of transition planning and helps them build a succession strategy that fits their unique business needs.
"I've been through transition discussions with my kids, and I know it's not comfortable. As a former ag lender, I've also seen my community struggle with these conversations," said NCBA President Gene Copenhaver. "I hope resources like this make it easier for cattle producers across the country to secure the future of their farms and ranches."
The learning module includes practical information and a workbook that families can use as they develop plans for transferring ownership and leadership responsibilities. The goal is to help producers reduce uncertainty and ensure a smoother transition between generations.
"You owe it to your loved ones to have the courage to tackle this challenge by creating a succession plan," said Professor Shannon Ferrell of Oklahoma State University, a specialist in estate and succession planning. "If you don't plan now, you may end up leaving your family with a burden instead of a gift."
According to Ferrell, every operation will experience a transition at some point. By creating a clear plan before that time arrives, families can make better decisions and avoid challenges that may arise during ownership changes.
The resource serves as a starting point for producers who want to preserve their farm or ranch legacy while supporting future generations. In addition to the learning module, related educational materials such as webinar recordings, podcast discussions, and training sessions are also available.
The succession planning program is offered at no cost and is supported through funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It provides cattle producers and agricultural families with practical tools to help secure the future of their operations.
