New Durum Lines Receive Support For Registration

The Prairie Grain Development Committee held its annual meetings last month.

Two durum lines, DT 2005 and DT 2009, from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Swift Current Research and Development Centre received support during this year's virtual event for registration.

Durum Breeder Dr Yuefeng Ruan is pleased with the new lines.

He says DT 2005 has a great agronomic package that producers should like.

"DT2005 has high yielding, has excellent yellow pigment, also resistant to rust. For FHB (Fusarium Head Blight) resistance it's comparable to Brigade."

Ruan says DT 2009 also has some great characteristics.

"It has intermediate resistance to FHB (Fusarium Head Blight). This line for the yielding side is similar to Brigade, protein quality side is similar to a Strongfield."

Ruan says the lines now are open to tender from seed companies, will be renamed, sent out for seed multiplication and will likely be available
to producers in about three years depending the seed companies decision on a release date.

Two new wheat lines, HY2095 and HY2096, from Dr Richard Cuthbert's Wheat Breeding Program also received support for registration.
