New USDA rules to enhance fairness in agricultural markets

In a move to bolster competition and fairness in agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), led by Tom Vilsack, has announced a set of new measures. This initiative aligns with The President’s Executive Order on Promoting Competition in America's Economy and focuses on addressing competition issues in agricultural markets to support small and mid-size farmers.

The USDA has finalized a rule under the Packers and Stockyards Act, targeting the poultry industry. This rule requires transparency from Live Poultry Dealers in their contracts with poultry growers. It mandates a disclosure document that provides essential information, helping growers make informed financial decisions. This rule is a significant step towards cleaning up deceptive practices in the broiler chicken market.

Furthering its commitment to competition and innovation, the USDA is also focusing on the seed industry. The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has sent letters to seed companies reinforcing the need for clear and meaningful information on seed varietals. This move ensures farmers have the necessary information to make competitive choices in the market.

For meat product procurement, the USDA is clarifying that domestically produced meat must be from animals born, raised, and slaughtered in the U.S. This clarification will ensure that USDA purchases benefit U.S. producers and nutrition assistance program recipients.

Additionally, the USDA has established a Chief Competition Officer position within the AMS. This senior role will oversee and implement competition policies across the Department, ensuring fair market practices and compliance with the Packers & Stockyards Act.

These actions by the USDA mark a significant stride towards a more transparent, fair, and competitive agricultural sector. They demonstrate the Department's ongoing efforts to uphold the interests of American farmers, ensuring they operate in a marketplace that is both fair and transparent.
