Pea Imports To China Increase Amid India's Restrictions

India has been a challenging market for Canada's pulse exporters.

Mac Ross is Pulse Canada's Manager of Market Access and Trade Policy.

"Since 2017 we've seen tariffs on both peas and lentils and peas also face quantitative restrictions going into India," he said. "A certain amount of tonnage that can be imported throughout the year, which has really severely limited the ability of not just Canada but all pea producers globally to sell into that market. For Canada we've been lucky in a sense that another market has stepped up and picked up that slack in a big way in China."

India has set a tariff of 50 per cent on Canadian peas, in addition to a quantitative restriction.

India's tariff on Canadian lentils is 30 per cent.
