Potato Harvest Underway With Good Yields, Quality

Potato harvest is underway for the earliest planted fields in Manitoba, with most potato crops ready to be harvested.

Manitoba Agriculture plant pathologist Vikram Bisht says there is good moisture in the fields, with growers bringing in good yields, anywhere from 400 to 500 bags per acre, which is well above the provincial average of around 310 bags per acre.

From what he's seen so far, quality is looking good, too.

"I was afraid some of the fields that had late blight would show up as an infection, but I checked a couple of fields where the late blight was on the plants, and when I checked the tubers, it looked perfectly fine. So I expect the potatoes in storage will hold very well," he said.

We are taking students out to southern Manitoba to Hespler Farms! Farmer Wayne will teach students how he plants and cares for his potato crop and why potatoes are such a unique crop to grow. Teachers, check out your AITC Dashboard for Math'd Potatoes, a potato-themed classroom resource to pair with this tour video. Thank you to Peak of the Market and Penner Farm Services for making this event possible.
