Canada’s 2025 pulse harvest is coming in far larger than earlier expected, including bigger lentil and pea crops.
Statistics Canada’s survey-based crop production report Thursday pegged this year’s national lentil crop at 3.363 million tonnes, up from StatsCan’s model-based September estimate of 2.972 million and above last year’s 2.431-million tonne crop. The reported yield climbed to 1,722 lbs/acre, compared with 1,517 lbs/acre in September and 1,281 lbs last year. If accurate, it would be Canada’s largest lentil crop on record, topping the 2016 crop of 3.193 million.
Dry peas saw a similar boost. The crop is now estimated at 3.934 million tonnes, rising well above the September estimate of 3.563 million and surpassing the 2024 harvest of 3.132 million. Yields soared to 42.3 bu/acre, up from 38.3 bu in September and 34.8 last year. This year’s crop would still fall below the 2020 harvest of 4.594 million.
Estimated chickpea production climbed to 481,589 tonnes, far outpacing the 331,000-tonne September estimate and last year’s 289,300 tonnes, thanks to a jump in yield to 1,970 lbs/acre compared with 1,381 lbs in September and 1,318 lbs in 2024.
Flax output is pegged at 454,461 tonnes, well above September’s 365,414 tonnes and last year’s 327,800 tonnes. Yields surged to 29.1 bu/acre, up from 24.1 bu in September and 20.4 bu a year earlier.
Sunflowers finished at 69,128 tonnes, beating the 61,230-tonne September forecast and last year’s 50,680 tonnes. Yields rose to 2,147 lbs/acre, surpassing both September’s 2,054 lbs and 2024’s 1,956 lbs.
