Soybean Growers Consider Second Herbicide Application

As the end of June approaches, most soybean producers have already completed their first pass of weed control.

Kristen Podolsky, production specialist with Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers, says it's now time to start thinking about going in with a second herbicide application.

She notes timing will be important for the second application.

"We want to keep the crop weed free up until basically canopy closure," said Podolsky. "So the window for the second pass of glyphosate is going to be throughout the flowering stage, which we haven't reached yet, but in the next week or two we're going to start seeing that first flower open up on the soybean plant along the main stem. As soon as we start to see that first flower, we usually have about 10 days before the window is going to close for that second herbicide application."

Podolsky says another weed concern is volunteer Roundup Ready canola starting to pop up in Roundup Ready soybeans.
