Specialty Corn Workshop Offered in Albany March 6

By Linda Geist and Todd Higgins

University of Missouri Extension will offer a half-day workshop March 6 on specialty corn at MU’s Hundley-Whaley Extension Education Center in Albany. The event runs 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

MU Extension horticulture specialist Todd Higgins and others will tell about the different types of Heritage corn including sweet corn, popcorn, and heritage (colored) corn. Heritage corns can command a premium price and have a variety of uses.

“This workshop will help growers explore the various types of Heritage corn, how to save seed, and the agronomics behind successfully growing them,” says Higgins. Topics include planting dates, populations, weed control, nutrient needs, pests and diseases such as Tar Spot.
