StatsCan Seeding Estimates

Western Canadian farmers will seed a record area of canola this spring.

Statistics Canada estimates growers intend to plant 20.37 million acres of the oilseed, easily surpassing the mark of 18.9 million established in 2011. The number is based on an extensive survey of producers at the end of March.

"They are about 1.2 million acres less than my March 30th estimate," says Larry Weber with Weber Commodities in Saskatoon. "They have no increase for canola in Alberta and they have Manitoba only going up 525,000 acres."

Weber believes the Statistics Canada estimate for Saskatchewan is more accurate. It says canola area is expected to rise nearly 10 per cent to 10.8 million acres, which would be the sixth consecutive increase.
