Understanding The Hazards Of Grain Bins

Farmers are working to get crops off the field and into the bin, which means it's time to review grain bin safety.

Glen Blahey of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association says a large-capacity auger can move hundreds of bushels of grain in a minute, while the average adult male only occupies two-and-a-half to three bushels of space.

"So if you think about a grain auger that can move 250 bushels of grain in a minute, that means it moves the equivalent of about 125 people -- the volume of space 125 people would occupy -- in a minute," he says, "so you have to make sure that prior to that grain being put into motion, no one is on the surface, or can have that grain come down on top of them."
