Weather Outlook For May 26, 2015

By Kyle Imhoff

East-central Pennsylvania is now experiencing ‘moderate drought’ conditions with the remainder of the eastern third of the state (and a sliver of the northwest) seeing abnormally dry conditions. The next 7 days will be relatively unsettled, which will bring the potential for some reprieve from the lack of rainfall recently.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be slightly above normal with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s across Pennsylvania. Southwest winds will bring in more humid air with numerous showers and thunderstorms early in the day in the west and primarily in the afternoon and evening across eastern PA. Some storms could be strong, with damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain. Temperatures will slowly moderate through the early part of the weekend. Thursday and Friday will be dry in most spots, though a few showers and storms will be possible (<30% chance each day). By Saturday evening, a cold front will approach western Pennsylvania which will bring the best chance of more widespread, more organized rain to the region. This will bring showers and storms to eastern Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon and evening as the front slowly traverses eastward. The front will likely stall over Pennsylvania which will provide an extended period of wet weather from Monday through the middle of the week, and potentially even through next Friday. Temperatures will remain near to above normal through the end of next week.

There are indications that much of June and July will be dry across Pennsylvania based on analog forecasts.

We are taking students out to southern Manitoba to Hespler Farms! Farmer Wayne will teach students how he plants and cares for his potato crop and why potatoes are such a unique crop to grow. Teachers, check out your AITC Dashboard for Math'd Potatoes, a potato-themed classroom resource to pair with this tour video.
