GA Weekly Crop Update

Cotton:  This years cotton crop is now all over the board. It ranges from the 5th leaf to well into the first week of bloom, and it also ranges from very clean with no pigweeds to completely covered in pigweeds. The hot dry weather has the oldest cotton wilting down by lunch where the younger cotton is holding up much better. It is very easy to find aphids and spider mites building in most fields but not close to a treatable threshold yet.

Plant bugs are scattered around in the biggest cotton and a few fields have been treated for them as they were putting out pix. For the most part growers have done a good job managing pigweeds this year but there is still going to be a lot of hand pulling left to clean up the spots this year.

Corn:  Most corn has received 2 fungicide application and there is talk about putting a 3rd one on the youngest corn as we are still trying to out run southern rust. I am not sure how many will actually do that or if it will even be needed but some are talking about it.

Peanuts:  Peanuts still look very good. Most are blooming and starting to set a few pegs now. Growers are wrapping up gypsum applications and have one fungicide out and have started on the 2nd application.

Hay/Pastures:  Armyworms are here! If you haven’t looked for them or treated them yet it is time to go look, they are not in every field at levels that can wipe us out but they are out there and in some cases need treating immediately.

Welcome to the farm! Spend the day with me as we get ready and plant some corn. Have you ever driven a tractor? What do you think of the Unverferth Seed Tender? How many mice do you think Pepper has caught? My favorite part of the day was the "planting moon" and eating dinner in the tractor cab with Grant
